Chaudhry Rehmat Ali is a renowned figure of the Pakistan movement. Among other things, he is known for two main reasons. Firstly, he coined the name “Pakistan”, and secondly, for writing an eight-page pamphlet known as “Now or Never; Are We to Live or Perish Forever”. There are several facts attached to his life which are not well-known and are often lost in the pages of our history. He was born on 16 November 1895 in a Punjabi Gujjar family in Hoshiarpur District of Punjab. He graduated from Islamia Madrassa, Lahore in 1918. After teaching at Aitcheson College, Lahore, he joined Punjab University to study Law. In 1930, he moved to England and joined Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Chaudhry Rehmat Ali published the famous pamphlet”Now or Never” in 1933. The major highlight of this pamphlet is that it is the first time the word Pakistan was used. He also published a book ‘Pakistan, the Fatherland ok Pakistani Nation’ in which he gave the detailed explanation of how he came up with the term Pakistan. Male Gujjars are entitled to use the prefix Ch. (abbreviation for Chaudhury) in front of their first name. This acts as a courtesy title. In North West Frontier Province, Gujjars normally use the pre-fix of "Sardar" in their name. Well, known personalities are Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar, Sardar Mehtab Abbassi (Former chief Minister of NWFP) etc. Gujjars are settled in the vast majority in Hazara division especially in Mansehra, Haripur and Abbottabad. He is credited with creating the name "Pakistan" for a separate Muslim homeland in South Asia. He propagated the Scheme of Pakistan with a missionary zeal since its inception in 1933. He also founded Pakistan National Movement to propagate his ideas. Being as a political thinker and an idealist, he condemned Muhammad Ali Jinnah for accepting a smaller Pakistan in 1947. He wanted to save every Indian Muslim from Hindu domination. In 1933, he wrote his ideas in the famous pamphlet entitled "Now or Never; Are We to Live or Perish Forever" also known as Pakistan Declaration.
